The idea for Torraccia di Chiusi comes from a deep passion for ‘Mother Earth’, and perhaps a touch of feyness (!), on the part of the owners: Stefano and Donatella.

Although they have different working backgrounds, (Stefano has a background in History, while Donatella has specialized in Zoology), they are both keen environmentalists, and they decided to set up their farm business out of sheer love for nature, history and art history, in one of the most interesting areas of Tuscany.

After a long search for land that, once planted with vineyards, could produce fine wine, Stefano and Donatella ‘discovered’ this property. When they bought it, it had been completely abandoned and vandalized for 40 years. Yet the fascination of the site was intact, and they decided to take on the challenge of ‘rescuing’ it, a challenge seen by many people as sheer folly, owing to the huge effort obviously needed to bring this unique place back to life.

The property had belonged to the Abbracciabeni family for 750 years (at least), and was bought by Stefano and Donatella in 2001. Restoration work started 10 years ago, and in some ways is still in progress. At the moment, the property consists of the owners’ villa, with adjacent buildings for visiting guests, and the surrounding land: woods, vineyards, and olive groves, all organically cultivated.
